Woman dies after being thrown from bridge without bungee cord in Brazil

A 21-year-old woman died in Brazil after workers at a bungee-jumping event threw her from a bridge without attaching her to the safety cord, causing her to fall about 130 feet (40 meters), according to local media reports. Six people linked to the event have been detained.

The incident happened on Saturday morning at the “Skeleton Bridge” in Limeira, a city in Brazil’s São Paulo state.

Witnesses told Military Police that workers appeared to have forgotten to attach the safety cord before she was pushed from the platform, according to g1. Video shared on social media showed workers carrying her to the platform before the fall, followed by people shouting about the rope.

Responding emergency crews pronounced her dead at the scene.

g1 identified the victim as Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas and reported that she had shared posts from the site before the jump, showing the event setup and people using equipment on the bridge. One of the posts showed a banner for ‘Entre Cordas,’ the company linked to the activity.

“Who was the crazy person who let me come jump off a bridge???” she wrote in the post.

Rápido no Ar, a local outlet in Limeira, reported that some of the event organizers left the area after the fall. In a follow-up report, the outlet said six people linked to the organization had been detained, including five men and one woman.

A local rescue news account which follows firefighters and emergency responders reported that two suspects left the area after the incident and were later found with help from a police helicopter, which searched a wooded area near the bridge.

Her fiancé was also at the bridge and was taken for medical care after becoming ill when he learned she had died, according to the rescue account.

The case is being investigated by the Civil Police, which will determine whether anyone involved in the event will face criminal charges.
