6 killed in New York motel fire; man arrested on arson charges
Six people were killed in a fire at a motel in upstate New York, according to state police. A suspect has been arrested on manslaughter and arson charges
The fire was reported just after 6 a.m. at the Knights Inn at 2603 East Main Street in Endwell, a community west of Binghamton. Firefighters arrived to find heavy black smoke coming from the front of the building and flames showing from the rear.
The fire spread rapidly through the motel, displacing numerous residents and bringing a large response from fire, ambulance and police agencies across Broome County. At least two people were taken to Wilson Medical Center.
State police later said six people had died in the fire. Their names have not been released.
Tyler J. Russell, 24, of Endwell, was arrested at about 8:26 p.m., according to state police. He was charged with six counts of second-degree manslaughter and one count of fourth-degree arson.
Russell was processed at the state police barracks in Endwell and turned over to the Broome County Jail for arraignment.
Police have not released details about what they believe started the fire or what the suspect is accused of doing.
A temporary shelter was set up at Vestal United Methodist Church for residents who were displaced, and the Red Cross is assisting those affected. The investigation remains ongoing.
