Paul Pelosi faces possible hit-and-run charge after crash in California

Paul Pelosi, the husband of Rep. Nancy Pelosi, is facing a possible hit-and-run charge after authorities say he struck a parked car in Northern California and drove away.

The incident happened at about 2:30 p.m. Friday on Yount Street in Yountville, a town in Napa County, according to the sheriff’s office. Pelosi, 86, was driving a brown convertible when he hit a parked car.

A witness told authorities that Pelosi briefly stopped after the crash and then drove away. The witness reported the crash and pointed deputies in the direction Pelosi’s vehicle was last seen traveling.

The parked car sustained major rear damage and its front tire was forced onto the curb, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies later found Pelosi’s convertible on Yountville Cross Road, where it was partially blocking the road. Pelosi admitted to deputies that he had hit something, but said he did not know what he struck and kept driving.

Officials said Pelosi drove until his vehicle became inoperable and he was unable to continue. Investigators determined he had no alcohol in his system at the time of the crash.

The sheriff’s office said the case will be sent to the district attorney’s office for review. Authorities will also submit a driver re-evaluation referral to the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

“We are aware of the July 3 incident involving Paul Pelosi and recognize the significant public interest surrounding the matter,” the Napa County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement. “At this time, the case has not yet been referred to the Napa County District Attorney’s Office for review.”

“If and when the case is submitted, it will be evaluated based on the facts, the available evidence, and the applicable law,” the district attorney’s office added.
