12-year-old, relative drown in Virginia pond during rescue attempt
A 12-year-old and a woman drowned in a private pond in Virginia after the child began struggling and a family member attempted to rescue them, according to officials.
The incident was reported at about 5:58 p.m. on Sunday in the 13300 block of Bradley Bridge Road in Chesterfield County, according to the Chesterfield County Police Department.
Police said the child entered the pond and began struggling in the water. A 30-year-old woman and family member went into the pond in an attempt to rescue the child, but she also became submerged.
Both victims were recovered from the water, and police officers, firefighters and emergency medical workers immediately began lifesaving efforts. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
Their identities have not been released. The incident remains under investigation.
The deaths came one week after a similar incident in Ohio, where five people drowned after four of them entered the Scioto River to help a struggling swimmer.
