One person was killed and six others were injured in a shooting at an unsanctioned party attended by more than 300 people near Morgan Hill, California, according to sheriff’s officials. No arrests have been made.

The shooting happened Saturday night on Hale Avenue near Miramonte Avenue in an unincorporated area of Santa Clara County, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies were sent to the area at about 10:16 p.m. after reports of intoxicated people in the street and someone throwing bottles at passing cars.

When they arrived, more than 300 partygoers were hurrying to leave after several gunshots had been fired. Deputies found multiple people with gunshot wounds and provided aid until emergency medical workers arrived.

One victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Six others were injured, and several were taken to local hospitals. Information about their conditions was not released.

The gathering had been promoted on social media but was not sanctioned, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office. Officials believe a handgun was used and said the shooting appears to have been an isolated incident.

Officers from several nearby law enforcement agencies helped secure the scene, control traffic and assist with the investigation. A relocation area was established for people trying to find friends or relatives who had attended the party.

Homicide detectives are working to identify the person or people responsible. No information about a possible motive or suspects has been released.
