3 women killed, over 30 injured in fireworks explosion in Mexico

Three women were killed and more than 30 people were injured after fireworks exploded during a religious celebration in southern Mexico, according to local reports. Several children were among those injured.

The explosion happened Saturday night in Real del Limón, a community in the municipality of Cocula in Guerrero state, during celebrations honoring Saint James the Apostle, according to El Financiero.

Preliminary reports indicate that a spark from a traditional “torito” fireworks display reached an area where pyrotechnic material was being stored near a church, causing a powerful explosion.

The three women suffered severe injuries and burns and died while being taken to the General Hospital in the nearby city of Iguala. One of them was eight months pregnant.

More than 30 other people were injured, including children as young as 3 years old. Information about their conditions was not released.

Images from the aftermath showed significant damage to the church and a nearby structure, with part of the walls and roof collapsed and debris scattered across the area. Firefighters, police and military personnel responded to the scene.

The incident was captured on video.
