Barry Manilow says he will undergo surgery after cancerous spot found on left lung
Singer and songwriter Barry Manilow said he will undergo surgery to remove a cancerous spot found on his left lung, according to a statement he released.
The statement was shared Monday after Manilow completed a series of Christmas charity concerts in California. He said the spot was discovered during an MRI ordered following several weeks of bronchitis and a relapse.
“As many of you know I recently went through six weeks of bronchitis followed by a relapse of another five weeks. Even though I was over the bronchitis and back on stage at the Westgate Las Vegas, my wonderful doctor ordered an MRI just to make sure that everything was OK,” Manilow said.
“The MRI discovered a cancerous spot on my left lung that needs to be removed. It’s pure luck (and a great doctor) that it was found so early. That’s the good news,” he added.
Manilow said doctors do not believe the cancer has spread and that no chemotherapy or radiation is planned. He said he will need about a month to recover and that his January concerts will be rescheduled.
Manilow, 82, is a Grammy-winning singer and songwriter known for songs including “Mandy,” “Copacabana,” and “Can’t Smile Without You.” He has sold more than 85 million records worldwide and has maintained a long-running concert residency in Las Vegas.
Ticket holders for the rescheduled January shows will be able to use their existing tickets for the new dates, according to his statement.
