Mayor of Nampa, Idaho, dies after medical emergency at town hall

Nampa, Idaho, Mayor Rick Hogaboam died after suffering a medical emergency during a regional event in nearby Eagle on Wednesday evening, city officials said. He was 47.

Hogaboam suffered the medical emergency Wednesday evening and died later that night, according to the City of Nampa and the coroner’s office.

The medical emergency happened during a Regional Town Hall at Eagle City Hall, according to KTVB, citing officials. The station reported that Hogaboam collapsed around 6:45 p.m. during the event.

The coroner said he was pronounced dead at 8:11 p.m. and listed the cause of death as cardiac tamponade, a condition in which fluid builds up around the heart and prevents it from pumping effectively.

KTVB reported that Eagle Mayor Brad Pike began CPR immediately and was joined by Eagle’s police chief before first responders arrived.

Nampa, a city of about 115,000 people west of Boise in southwestern Idaho, announced Hogaboam’s death in a statement on its website.

“It is with the deepest sadness that we must report Mayor Rick Hogaboam experienced a medical emergency on the evening of March 18 and has passed away,” the city said. “We ask the community to please keep his family and loved ones in your prayers during this incredibly difficult time. As we begin to mourn this unbelievable loss, please provide grace while we navigate the loss of not only our Mayor, but also our friend.”

KTVB reported that Nampa City Council President David Bills will serve as interim mayor until the city council appoints a replacement to serve until the November general election.

The city said Thursday that Hogaboam’s memorial service will be held on March 31 at 5 p.m. at the Ford Idaho Center.
