VA employee shot at clinic in Jasper, Georgia; suspect killed by police
A VA employee was shot at a clinic in Jasper, Georgia, according to officials and local media reports. Responding officers shot and killed the suspect.
Police were called to the clinic at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday on a report of shots fired, the City of Jasper said. Officers found the suspected shooter at the scene, confronted the individual and shot him during the encounter.
The victim was taken for treatment and then airlifted to a hospital, but their condition was not immediately known.
Jasper Police Chief Matt Dawkins said the suspect was shot outside the VA clinic by officers and is deceased. He said investigators do not yet know what led up to the shooting, but that the suspect was from the area.
A WXIA reporter, citing the Department of Veterans Affairs press secretary, said the victim is a VA employee. Cody Alcorn of WXIA reported that the victim is a doctor, though officials have not publicly identified the person.
Chief Dawkins said the FBI will investigate the case and that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) also responded after being requested by local police.
Jasper is a small city in north Georgia, about 50 miles north of Atlanta. Officials said the investigation remains active and that more details will be released later.
