A deputy U.S. marshal was shot and killed while serving an arrest warrant on a fugitive accused of sexual battery in Louisiana, according to officials. The suspect was taken into custody after a standoff.

The shooting happened Monday afternoon at a home on Rutland Road in Alexandria, a city in central Louisiana. Deputy U.S. Marshal Michael Andrew Hanson, 36, was working with members of the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office to arrest 48-year-old Clarence Frazier.

Frazier was wanted after failing to appear in state court for trial on a charge of sexual battery involving a person with infirmities.

Officers found Frazier at his home and obtained a search warrant. Wearing clear law enforcement markings, they approached the residence, announced their presence and forced their way inside.

Frazier barricaded himself in a bedroom and opened fire when officers found him, striking Hanson, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. Hanson died from his injuries at about 4:45 p.m.

Frazier remained barricaded in the bedroom during a standoff with law enforcement before he was taken into custody.

Hanson joined the U.S. Marshals Service in 2020 and served in Alabama and Louisiana. He previously worked for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and several police agencies in Mississippi.

He is survived by his wife and two children. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating the shooting.
