2 dead in shooting at Grey nightclub in Konstanz, Germany

One person has been killed and several others have been injured after a man opened fire at the Grey nightclub in Konstanz in southern Germany, close to the border with Switzerland. The suspect was shot dead by police. (more)

The incident happened at about 4:30 a.m. local time on Sunday when police were called to reports of shots being fired at the Grey nightclub, which is located in an industrial part of the city, less than 2 kilometers (1.2 mile) from the Swiss border.

After the shooting, the gunman fled the nightclub but was located by police officers a short time later, after which a gun battle ensued, a local official said. Both a police officer and the suspect were shot during the exchange of gunfire.

Police in the state of Baden-W├╝rttemberg confirmed that one person had been killed in the shooting at the nightclub and three others were seriously injured. The police officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries.

A large number of emergency services, including a helicopter and special police forces, were deployed to the scene because it was initially unclear whether there were multiple shooters. Police confirmed later on Sunday morning that the suspect acted alone.

Police said the preliminary investigation suggests that the shooting was the result of a personal dispute and not an act of terrorism. The suspect was described as a 34-year-old man who was originally from Iraq, but his name was not immediately released.
