11 people stabbed at Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan

A knife-wielding man attacked shoppers at a Walmart store in Traverse City, Michigan, on Saturday afternoon, injuring at least 11 people, according to local officials and witnesses. Many of those injured are in critical condition.

The incident happened at about 4:40 p.m. on Saturday when a 42-year-old man, whose name has not yet been released, entered the Walmart Supercenter in Traverse City and attacked customers.

A Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s deputy arrived on scene within minutes and took the suspect into custody with the help of witnesses. The suspect was identified as a 42-year-old Michigan resident who was not known to police.

“Based on the information that we have at this time, it appears they were random acts, that the victims were not predetermined,” Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea said at a press conference. The motive is unknown.

Munson Medical Center in Traverse City said it was treating 11 victims from the stabbing attack, including 6 people who were listed in critical condition and 5 in serious condition. Some of them were undergoing surgery on Saturday night.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected by this event, and we are grateful to the first responders and law enforcement for their swift action,” the hospital said in a statement. “We are working closely with local authorities and emergency services to ensure the best possible care for those impacted.”

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said in a statement: “I’m in touch with law enforcement about the horrible news out of Traverse City. Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence. I am grateful to the first responders for their swift response to apprehend the suspect.”

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said: “FBI personnel are responding to provide any necessary support to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office in their investigation of the attacks at the Walmart.”

Traverse City is about 125 miles north of Grand Rapids.
