Five women were among six people injured when suspects on a moped threw acid at them in Jersey City, New Jersey, in what officials said appeared to be a targeted attack.

The incident happened Monday night near 105 Wilkinson Avenue, where Jersey City officials said two suspects on a moped drove past a car and threw an acidic substance at the victims.

Officials initially reported five victims, all of whom were women, according to NBC News. A sixth victim was later identified, but officials have not released that person’s gender.

Three of the victims were teenagers, according to Jersey City public safety spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione, who provided updated information to Hudson County View.

All five victims initially identified were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that included skin burns and peeling, Wallace-Scalcione told the outlet. Officials said all of the victims were stable.

One of the victims, a 21-year-old woman, was transferred to the burn unit at St. Barnabas in Livingston to be treated for second-degree burns to her face and scalp.

One juvenile has been arrested in connection with the attack, with charges pending. Police have not said whether a second suspect has been identified or taken into custody.

Jersey City Mayor James Solomon said the attack appeared to follow an earlier altercation. Officials later said it may have stemmed from a dispute involving a large group of people earlier in the day.

“My thoughts are with those hurt in this horrific attack, and I want our communities to know that violence like this has absolutely no place on our streets,” Solomon said.
