A 9-story apartment building has partially collapsed in Kyiv, trapping people inside, as Russia carries out one of its heaviest attacks on the Ukrainian capital in recent months, according to Ukrainian officials.

The collapse was reported early Wednesday, where emergency crews are heading to the scene, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. The number of casualties was not immediately clear.

The damaged building is a 9-story residential block in the Desnianskyi district, according to officials. Part of it collapsed during the attack, leaving people trapped inside as rescuers rush to the scene.

Kyiv remains under attack by missiles and drones, with explosions reported across the city. Officials are asking residents to stay in shelters.

Damage has also been reported in several other parts of the capital, including the Shevchenkivskyi, Holosiivskyi, Obolonskyi and Podilskyi districts, according to the head of Kyiv’s military administration, Tymur Tkachenko.

In the Shevchenkivskyi district, a fire broke out on the roof of a hotel and a medical facility was partially damaged, officials said. Klitschko said a building housing an ambulance substation was hit, injuring five medical workers and drivers.

One of the injured, a paramedic, is in extremely critical condition. Two other people from the Shevchenkivskyi district have been hospitalized.

In the Holosiivskyi district, officials reported a fire in a high-rise building. Debris has also fallen in the Desnianskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts.

Ukrainian officials said the attack is ongoing and warned of a continued ballistic missile threat against the capital.

“Kyiv is under a fierce enemy attack,” Klitschko said. “Stay in shelters.”
