11 killed, 12 injured in shooting at soccer field in central Mexico

At least 11 people were killed and 12 others were injured when gunmen opened fire on people gathered at a soccer field in central Mexico, according to officials.

The attack occurred Sunday in the Loma de Flores neighborhood of Salamanca after a soccer match, when people were gathered at the field, Mayor Cesar Prieto said. The city is in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato.

Prieto said an armed group arrived and opened fire on those present at the field. Ten people were killed at the scene and another died later at a hospital. At least 12 people were injured, including a woman and a minor.

“Today we are going through a serious moment, a serious social breakdown,” Prieto said. “Unfortunately, there are criminal groups trying to subdue authorities, and that is something they will not achieve.”

Prieto said city officials are coordinating with state and federal authorities, including the state security secretary, prosecutors, and Mexico’s federal security forces. He also appealed directly to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and the state governor for assistance.

“I am asking the president and the governor for support so we can restore peace,” Prieto said. “We will move forward, and those responsible will be found.”

Guanajuato has become one of Mexico’s most violent states in recent years, driven by clashes between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel, both designated as terrorist organizations by the Trump administration.

The conflict has resulted in hundreds of killings and disappearances, frequent mass shootings, and the discovery of multiple clandestine graves across the state.
