Iran claims another projectile struck nuclear plant premises
Iran has told the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that another hit the premises of the Bushehr nuclear power plant, according to the U.N. nuclear watchdog.
The IAEA said Tuesday that Iran informed the agency another projectile struck the grounds of the plant. “According to Iran, there was no damage to the NPP itself nor injuries to staff, and the condition of the plant is normal,” the statement said.
The IAEA’s statement was based on information provided by Iran and did not amount to independent confirmation that the plant had been struck.
The agency also said its director general Rafael Grossi renewed his call for maximum restraint to avoid nuclear safety risks during the conflict.
Bushehr, on Iran’s southern coast along the Persian Gulf, is the country’s only operating nuclear power plant.
Russian contractors helped complete the plant after years of delays, and Russia has supplied fuel for the reactor under a cooperation arrangement tied to international monitoring of Iran’s nuclear program.
Tuesday’s report marks the second time in a week that Iran has told the IAEA a projectile hit the premises of the Bushehr plant.
