A 12-year-old American boy was injured in a shark attack while swimming with his brother during a tour in the Bahamas, police said. He was taken for treatment and was last listed in stable condition.

The attack happened Tuesday afternoon in the area of Staniel Cay, part of the Exuma Cays, a chain of islands and small cays southeast of Nassau known for boating, beaches and water excursions.

Police in New Providence said they were notified shortly before 3:30 p.m. that the boy was being transported by boat after the attack.
