Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to 3,535
The death toll from the double earthquake that struck Venezuela has risen to 3,535, with more than 16,700 people injured, according to updated figures released by the Venezuelan government.
The government’s latest official update, dated Monday, listed 3,535 deaths, up from 3,342 on Sunday. The number of injured was unchanged at 16,740. The latest toll comes 12 days after the earthquakes struck west of Caracas.
Officials said 6,462 people have been rescued since the earthquakes struck near Montalbán on June 24, in an event the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has described as a doublet. The first earthquake had a magnitude of 7.2 and was followed 39 seconds later by a magnitude 7.5 quake.
The Venezuelan government said 25,016 patients have been treated, up from 23,820 on Sunday. It also reported 4,338 international rescuers, 27,930 volunteers and 29,567 deployed personnel.
The official number of damaged and collapsed buildings also remained unchanged. Venezuelan officials have listed 856 affected buildings, including 190 that collapsed.
A preliminary satellite assessment by NASA previously estimated that 58,870 buildings were damaged or destroyed. La Guaira state, north of Caracas, has been among the hardest-hit areas.
