5 foreign tourists found dead after going missing in Chile’s Patagonia region
Five foreign tourists have been found dead in Chile’s Patagonia region after authorities began searching for seven missing visitors, according to regional officials. The victims include citizens of Germany, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.
The deaths occurred inside Torres del Paine National Park, a remote area in southern Chile popular with international hikers. Regional officials said the bodies were located during a large search operation launched after the group was reported missing.
Regional officials confirmed that the victims are a Mexican woman, a Mexican man, a German woman, a German man, and a British woman. Authorities said recovery operations are underway and that repatriation procedures have begun with the corresponding consulates.
Officials did not immediately release details about where the victims were found or the circumstances leading to their deaths.
Authorities said the search phase has ended and efforts are now focused on recovering the bodies. Air evacuation is being prioritized, though weather conditions may affect the operation.
José Ruiz Pivcevic, the Presidential Delegate for the Magallanes region, said that other visitors in the area have been accounted for based on recent entry records. The park has been closed to the public.
Torres del Paine National Park is known for steep granite peaks, glacial lakes, and rapidly changing weather that can pose risks even on established trails. The park attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
