Bondi says she will “follow the law” after Oversight Committee subpoena
Attorney General Pam Bondi said she “will follow the law” when asked whether she will comply with an Oversight Committee subpoena related to the DOJ’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case.
NBC News correspondent Melanie Zanona reported Bondi’s remark on Wednesday. The subpoena, issued by House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, orders Bondi to appear for a deposition on April 14.
The House Oversight Committee voted Tuesday to direct Comer to subpoena Bondi as part of its review of the federal government’s investigation into Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. In its cover letter, the committee said it is examining possible mismanagement of the investigation.
The letter said the committee is also reviewing the circumstances of Epstein’s death and the investigations that followed, the operation of sex-trafficking rings, the ways Epstein and Maxwell allegedly sought to curry favor and wield influence to protect their activities, and potential ethics violations involving elected officials.
Lawmakers are also seeking information about how the Justice Department handled the investigation into Epstein and his associates, along with its review and release of records under the Epstein Files Transparency Act.
CNN reported that a Justice Department spokesperson called the subpoena “completely unnecessary,” saying lawmakers had already been invited to review the unredacted files at the department and that Bondi “has always made herself available to speak directly with members of Congress.”
