The incident began just before 1 p.m. on Tuesday when a single-engine Grumman AA-1 aircraft took off from Deer Valley Airport, which is located in northern Phoenix. The pilot of the plane reported a mechanical problem a short time later.

"The pilot indicated they would try to return to the airport," said Ian Gregor, a spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). "The plane went down about a half-mile off the runway end."

Footage from the scene showed that the aircraft crashed into a tree on the sidewalk of 19th Avenue, at the intersection with Adobe Drive. No vehicles or structures were impacted by the crash, although some debris was visible on the roadway.

The aircraft sustained major damage and both occupants were rushed to hospital in critical condition. A single-engine Grumman AA-1 is typically capable of carrying a maximum of two people, including the pilot.

The Federal Aviation Administration, and possibly the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), are expected to investigate the cause of Tuesday's accident.
