Mitch McConnell remains in rehab, not medically cleared to return to Senate

U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell remains in a rehabilitation facility and has not been medically cleared to return to the Senate after falling at his home in June, according to an update from the Office of the Attending Physician.

The update was released Monday amid mounting speculation about McConnell’s health and his ability to continue serving in the Senate.

Physicians are visiting McConnell every day to oversee his rehabilitation, the statement said. Since leaving the hospital, he has undergone multiple physical therapy sessions each day to rebuild his strength and reduce the risk of additional falls.

The attending physician said McConnell’s childhood bout with polio continues to have a significant effect on his mobility. Additional details about the fall and his condition were not released.

McConnell said he is working to return to his full schedule in Washington, D.C., and Kentucky but will be unable to attend the annual Fancy Farm picnic in western Kentucky on Saturday because of the intensive therapy.

“As always, I appreciate all of your continued well wishes, and I’m looking forward to getting back to the Senate and to Kentucky soon,” McConnell said.

The update did not provide a timeline for his release from the rehabilitation facility or his return to the Senate.
