Mexican illegal immigrant fatally shot by ICE officer in Houston
A Mexican illegal immigrant died after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot him during an attempted vehicle stop in Houston.
The incident happened at about 6:50 a.m. CT on Tuesday, when ICE officers tried to stop a vehicle during a targeted enforcement operation to arrest Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, whom the agency described as a Mexican national who was in the United States illegally.
ICE said Araujo was driving the vehicle and attempted to evade arrest. The agency said he rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle, refused multiple verbal commands and used his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE officer.
The officer then fired his weapon in self-defense, striking Araujo, according to ICE.
The Houston Fire Department said Araujo suffered a gunshot wound to the right side of his abdomen and was taken to Ben Taub Hospital while CPR was in progress, KPRC reported. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Three other people were detained, according to KPRC. It was not immediately clear why they were detained or whether they are facing charges.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is leading the investigation and is on the scene, ICE said.
