Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, who was well-known for music for movies such as "The Theory of Everything" and "Sicario," has unexpectedly died in Germany, his manager said on Saturday. He was 48 years old.

Jóhannsson passed away in Berlin on Friday but the cause of his death was not immediately known. "I'm so very sad. Today, I lost my friend who was one of the most talented musicians and intelligent people I knew. We came a long way together," his manager Tim Husom said.

Known for his compositions that often blended electronics with classical orchestrations, Jóhannsson became a popular film composer in recent years. His score for the 2014 film "The Theory of Everything" was his most popular, earning him a Golden Globe for Best Original Score and Oscar, BAFTA and Grammy nominations.

In 2016, Jóhannsson was nominated for Oscar and BAFTA awards for his score for the 2015 crime-thriller "Sicario." That year also saw the release of the science-fiction drama "Arrival," which earned him Golden Globe, BAFTA and Grammy nominations.

The Gorfaine/Schwartz Agency said it was "deeply saddened" by the sudden loss of its client. "His music has inspired many new generations of filmmakers and composers. He will be so greatly missed by his Gorfaine/Schwartz family as well as the entire film music community," the agency said in a statement.

Jóhannsson is survived by his parents, sisters and daughter.
