U.S. President Donald Trump will address the nation on Thursday morning after a gunman opened fire at a high school in South Florida, killing 17 people and injuring more than a dozen others, the White House says.

Trump, who did not appear in public after Wednesday's massacre, will deliver an address to the nation at 11 a.m. ET on Thursday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said. He will be speaking from the White House.

Also on Thursday morning, the president ordered that the U.S. flag is to be flown at half-staff across the nation until sunset on Monday. "Our Nation grieves with those who have lost loved ones in the shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida," Trump said in a proclamation.

Trump previously commented on the shooting on his Twitter account, saying that "no child, teacher or anyone else" should ever feel unsafe at an American school. He also noted that there were "many signs" that the suspect was mentally disturbed, and he called on people to always report such individuals.

"Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem," Trump said in a tweet.

The shooting happened on Wednesday afternoon when a 19-year-old man opened fire at his former high school, killing 17 people and injuring 14 others. The U.S. has experienced three of the deadliest mass shootings in modern history in just 5 months, killing 103 people and injuring nearly 900 others.
