The outage began just before 5 p.m. ET on Monday when users began reporting intermittent problems with the app. "Could not connect. Please check your connection and try again," said an error message received by a Snapchat user.

A short time later, the company confirmed that it was experiencing an outage. "Some Snapchatters are having issues with the app. We're looking into it!", the app said on its official Twitter account, providing no further details about the cause.

Just after 6 p.m. ET, Snapchat confirmed that the outage has been resolved. "Hi Snapchatters! Everything should be back to normal now - Please let us know if you are still having issues," the company said on Twitter.

It was not immediately known how many people were affected by the outage, but there were thousands of reports on social media networks, indicating that the outage was widespread.

Snapchat, which has its headquarters in California, was launched in September 2011 and has become an increasingly popular image messaging app with more than 100 million daily users. Snapchat users share nearly 9,000 Snaps every second.
