A large explosion followed by gunfire has been heard in central Kabul in an apparent attack on a Spanish embassy guest house, killing at least one Spanish policeman. (more)

The loud blast and gunfire were heard at 5:55 p.m. local time on Friday in the Shir Pur area of the capital, not far from an area that is home to foreign embassies and government buildings. The attack, involving no less than three militants, appeared to have targeted a guest house belonging to the Spanish embassy, but not the main embassy compound.

Interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said that a car bomb had exploded in the Shir Pur area of Kabul, and deputy interior minister Ayub Salangi later added that two suicide bombers had been shot dead by Afghan security forces. The attack was ongoing by 10 p.m. after several bursts of gunfire were heard throughout the evening, but the scene was mostly quiet after the initial assault.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said a Spanish policeman had succumbed to his injuries and said he was monitoring the situation. The Italian non-profit "Emergency," which has a hospital close to the scene of Friday's attack, said at least 7 Afghan nationals had been transported to the hospital, but provided no details on their conditions.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for Friday's attack.
