 2 yrs   Gunman in Colorado movie massacre sentenced to life in prison

              James Holmes, the 27-year-old man who went on a shooting rampage at a Colorado movie theater in 2012, has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The jury failed to secure an unanimous verdict to sentence Holmes to death, said Arapahoe County District Judge Samour. The shooting at the Century 16 Movie Theater in Aurora left twelve people dead and 70 others injured, making it one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history. The massacre happened during the midnight premiere of 'The Dark Knight Rises', the third installment in the Batman film series.

 2 yrs   Verdict reached in death penalty phase of Colorado movie massacre trial, to be read at 7 pm ET

              The jury in the Colorado movie massacre trial has reached a verdict in the death penalty phase against convicted gunman James Holmes, says court spokesman Rob McCallum. Arapahoe County District Judge Samour will take the bench at 5 p.m. MT (7 pm ET) to announce the verdict. No cameras will be allowed in the courtroom. The jury, consisting of nine women and three men, had been deliberating since Thursday afternoon whether Holmes should be executed or serve life in prison without the possibility of parole.

              Jurors in the Colorado movie massacre trial have unanimously concluded that mitigating factors such as mental illness do not outweigh aggravating ones, making gunman James Holmes eligible for the death penalty. The trial now enters a third phase during which it will be decided whether Holmes should be sentenced to death. Holmes was found guilty last month for the 2012 shooting at an Aurora movie theater that left 12 dead and 58 others injured, making it one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history.
