The incident began at around 6:45 p.m. CT on Saturday when police received reports that a suspect with a gun was inside the hospital's emergency room. Witnesses reported that the suspect held the gun to a baby's head, but the hostage was released just a short time later.
Journalist Allison Harris reported that the suspect himself remained inside the emergency room and threatened to take his own life, but the man was taken into custody at about 7:45 p.m. CT. Neither the hostage nor the suspect, or anyone else, was injured.
As a result of the incident, Baylor Scott & White Medical Center was put on lockdown and all entrances were closed. The emergency room itself was evacuated but operations at the hospital are expected to resume later on Saturday evening.
"You will continue to see the presence of law enforcement in the area as the investigation continues," the Waxahachie Police Department said in a statement. Other details about the circumstances of Saturday's incident were not immediately released.
Baylor Hospital in Waxahachie, the county seat of Ellis County, is about 27 miles south of Dallas.
