A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 has struck Chile, centered near Curico in the central region of Maule, or south of the capital Santiago, seismologists say. Shaking was also felt in neighboring Argentina.

The earthquake, which struck at 1:20 p.m. local time on Friday, was centered just east of Curico or just southeast of San Fernando and Rancagua. It struck at a depth of about 87 kilometers (54 miles), making it a relatively deep earthquake.

Chile's seismological service put the preliminary magnitude of Friday's earthquake at 6.4, and residents throughout the region reported feeling moderate to strong shaking. People in the capital Santiago also felt the earthquake, as well as residents in parts of neighboring Argentina.

"It started slowly but became stronger, then decreased in intensity again. It was fairly long," one resident in Santiago told the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

No tsunami warnings were issued after the earthquake.

Chile and the wider region are on the so-called 'Pacific Ring of Fire' which is regularly struck by large earthquakes, including the Great Chilean earthquake that struck the coast of central Chile on May 22, 1960. The 9.5-magnitude earthquake, the largest earthquake ever instrumentally recorded, left between 490 and 5,700 people killed.
