"Alan Colmes passed away this morning after a brief illness," his family said in a statement. "He leaves his adoring and devoted wife, Jocelyn Elise Crowley. He was a great guy, brilliant, hysterical, and moral. He was fiercely loyal, and the only thing he loved more than his work was his life with Jocelyn."

Other details about the cause of his death were not immediately available, but his colleagues and friends expressed their sadness over the unexpected news.

"The Fox family, Dr. Jocelyn Colmes, Monica Crowley and me personally have lost one of life's most decent, kind and wonderful people you'd ever want to meet," Fox News host Sean Hannity, who hosted a show with Colmes from 1996 through 2009, said in a statement.

On Twitter, Fox News host Brit Hume said: "So sad to hear of the death of Fox News colleague Alan Colmes. He and I agreed on little, but I liked him immensely. Good guy. R.I.P."

Meghan McCain, a fellow Fox News commentator and the daughter of U.S. Senator John McCain, said she was "deeply saddened" by the news of Colmes' death. "A very nice, genuine man I had the pleasure to work with," she said.

Alan Colmes was best known for his appearances as a commentator on the Fox News Channel. He was also the host of The Alan Colmes Show, a nationally syndicated talk-radio show distributed by Fox News Radio. It aired throughout the United States on Fox News Talk on Sirius and XM.
