Shooting at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in New York City

At least five people have been shot at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in New York City, local officials say. The suspect, who is reported to be a former employee, later died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. (more)





The incident began at around 3 p.m. ET on Friday when police were called to reports of multiple shots being fired on the 16th floor of the hospital, which is located in the Bronx. There was no immediate word on the circumstances of the shooting.

"NYPD is on scene at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital where there are reports of several people shot," NYPD spokesman J. Peter Donald said, providing no further details. NBC New York quoted a police spokesman as saying that at least 5 victims had been shot. Their conditions are unknown.

The suspect, who was said to be wearing a doctor's coat and armed with a rifle, was later found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was identified as a former employee who was recently let go by the hospital.

Law enforcement officials described the shooting attack as workplace violence and there was no indication of a link to terrorism.
