"Brazil, I'm devastated that I'm not well enough 2 come to Rock In Rio," the singer said on her Twitter account on Thursday afternoon. "I would do anything 4 u but I have to take care of my body right now. I ask for your grace and understanding, and promise that I will come back and perform for you soon."

Less than an hour later, Gaga said she had been taken to hospital. "It's not simply hip pain or wear and tear from tour. I'm in severe pain. I'm in good hands with the very best doctors," she added. It was not immediately known where or when she was taken to hospital.

In a brief statement, her team said Lady Gaga was suffering from "severe physical pain" that has impacted her ability to perform. "Lady Gaga is under the care of expert medical professionals. She sends her love to all her fans in Rio and thanks them for their support and understanding," the statement said.

Earlier this week, Lady Gaga revealed in a Netflix documentary that she suffers from fibromyalgia, a chronic condition that causes pain and stiffness all over the body. It can also cause sleep problems, fatigue, headaches, depression, and memory and concentration problems.

Gaga said she wanted to help raise awareness for the condition, which affects an estimated 2 percent of the adult population. The cause of fibromyalgia is not known, but it can be effectively treated and managed, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
