Louis-Dreyfus, who is 56, revealed the news in a statement on Twitter on Thursday afternoon. She noted that approximately 1 in 8 women will be affected by breast cancer during their life, adding: "Today, I'm the one."

The actress added: "The good news is that I have the most glorious group of supportive and caring family and friends, and fantastic insurance through my union. The bad news is that not all women are so lucky, so let's fight all cancers and make universal health care a reality."

Louis-Dreyfus received an outpouring of support from her fans and fellow celebrities. Former Vice President Joe Biden also responded on Twitter, posting a photo of him and Louis-Dreyfus along with the caption: "We Veeps stick together. Jill and I, and all of the Bidens, are with you, Julia."

Louis-Dreyfus appeared on "Saturday Night Live" in the 1980s and starred as Elaine Benes in the popular sitcom "Seinfeld" from 1989 through 1998. More recently, she has starred as Vice President Selina Meyer in the TV series "Veep."
