Police and military personnel are investigating after false reports about active shooters at the U.S. Air Force Academy near Colorado Springs. The base was put on lockdown for hours but no evidence of a shooting was found.

The incident began at about 10 p.m. on Friday when officers received reports of a shooting at or near the Preparatory School at the Air Force Academy, which is located about 10 miles north of Colorado Springs. It was followed by reports of shots being fired at the Vandenberg Hall dormitory.

A large number of emergency services responded to the scene, but after more than 2 hours of searching no evidence of a shooting had been found, despite multiple reports of active shooters. Some of the reports were sent to police through text message, claiming there were up to 3 gunmen.

Police confirmed on early Saturday morning that there was no active shooter and no one had been injured, but it was not immediately clear whether the incident was a deliberate hoax. The U.S. Air Force Academy made national news on Friday after a speech against racism went viral.

Cadets at the Air Force Academy received a text alert during the scare, warning them about the situation and telling them to shelter-in-place until further notice. All gates to the academy were also closed and a long line of cars formed as people waited for the all clear.
