The incident began just after 7 p.m. on Tuesday when police were called to reports of a man with an assault riffle near Barber Road Storage, which is close to the intersection with Wesleyan Avenue. Officers later reported that shots had been fired.

Specific details about the circumstances of the shooting were not immediately available, but it appears to have happened at or very close to the storage complex, which is surrounded by woods. Barber Road was shut down between I-76 and Morgan Street as police searched for the gunman.

As a precaution, Barberton High School and the sports fields - where football practice was taking place - were evacuated. Students were released to their families and those who weren't able to leave yet were briefly taken to Barberton Elementary School. All students are safe.

At about 9;30 p.m. police confirmed that the suspect had been shot and taken into custody. There was no immediate word on his condition, but there were no reports of any other injuries. It's unknown why he opened fire.
