The incident was first reported at 12:45 p.m. ET on Sunday when officers were called to 25430 Southwest 137th Avenue in Princeton, a community about 20 miles southwest of downtown Miami. Upon arrival, officers located the body of a young girl.

"A resident of Tuscany Place Apartments was throwing out his trash when he observed what appeared to be a child inside the dumpster," Miami-Dade Police Detective Argemis Colome said. "He immediately called 911 and officers from the MDPD South District responded."

The identity of the child was not immediately known, but police have described the victim as a black female between the ages of 3 and 8. There was no immediate word on the possible cause of her death, whether foul play was involved, or how long ago the child is believed to have died.

"The investigation continues," Detective Colome said.
