An improvised 'explosive or incendiary' device has been found near a Christmas market in the German city of Potsdam, not far from the capital Berlin, local police say. Only few details were immediately available. (more)

The incident began just after 3 p.m. local time on Friday when officers responded to a report of a suspicious package on Charlottenstraße in downtown Potsdam, a city about 27 kilometers (17 miles) southwest of Berlin.

Brandenburg Police confirmed just after 5 p.m. that the suspicion of an improvised explosive or incendiary device had been "confirmed," although specific details were not immediately available. It later added that the device had been defused.

"Specific details cannot be provided yet, please wait for more information," police said. Brandenburg Interior Minister Karl-Heinz Schröter said the package contained nails, though he didn't know yet whether it also contained explosives.

German media reported that the suspicious package had been delivered to a pharmacy close to the Christmas market. It was not immediately clear whether the incident is linked to terrorism.

A large number of emergency services, including heavily-armed special police forces, were called in. Parts of the surrounding area was evacuated as a precaution while bomb experts responded to the scene.
