              U.S. Senate Democrats have blocked a Republican-backed measure that aimed to derail the nuclear deal between world powers and Iran. Republicans needed 60 votes in favor to advance a resolution of disapproval but fell two votes short in a 58-42 vote. Four Democratic senators voted in favor of the Republican measure, while all 42 votes in opposition of the disapproval resolution were from Democrats or independents who typically back Democratic initiatives. The defeat of the resolution is a key victory for President Barack Obama, as it guarantees that the disapproval legislation will not reach his desk, allowing him to move forward and scale back sanctions.
