A man who attacked someone with a machete at a home in Los Angeles has been shot dead by police, officials say. It is believed to be a domestic incident.

The incident happened at about 7:20 p.m. PT on Saturday when officers were called to a home in the 8100 block of De Soto Avenue for a report of a man attacking people with a machete. The suspect was also said to be wearing a gas mask.

A large number of police officers responded to the scene, which resulted in an officer-involved shooting in which the suspect was killed. The victim who was attacked with the machete suffered only minor injuries.

"We were at a DUI checkpoint with LAPD and heard all their radios going crazy about a man with a machete and gas mask in Canoga Park. Then shots fired call and officer needs help call came over radio," local journalist Bill Melugin said on Twitter. He initially reported that 9 people were injured.

No officers were injured, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Details about the exact circumstances of the attack were not immediately known, but a neighbor told Melugin that she heard screaming and chaos at the house. There had also been screaming on Saturday morning and officers were called, the neighbor was quoted as saying.
