The incident happened at about 1:44 p.m. on Thursday when officers in Charlotte were called to reports of shots fired in the 4100 block of Carlyle Drive, which is located in the city's Freedom Division. Upon arrival, officers found a woman who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

"The female was pronounced deceased on scene by Medic," the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in a statement. The identity of the victim was not immediately released pending notification of her family.

Detectives believe that the incident is domestic related and that the victim and suspect were known to one another. They have identified 23-year-old Jonathan Bennett as a suspect in the woman's shooting death.

"Detectives believe that Mr. Bennett and the victim had an infant child together and after the shooting Mr. Bennett took the infant with him. There was a second child located unharmed on scene by officers," Charlotte police said.

The missing child has been identified as 2-month-old Journei Bennett. Jonathan is believed to have taken the child in an older white Ford Expedition with New York license plate HUP3071, but it's unknown where he may be taking her.

Anyone who sees either Jonathan or the missing child is urged to call 911 immediately, or call 704-432-TIPS and ask for a Homicide Unit Detective if you have any other information that could help investigators. You can also call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
