A moderate earthquake (σεισμός) with a preliminary magnitude of 4.3 has struck Greece, centered just northeast of the capital Athens, seismologists and residents say. Shaking has been felt widely across the capital. (more)

The earthquake, which struck at 10:24 p.m. local time on Monday, was centered near Sesi, about 33 kilometers (21 miles) northeast of Athens. It struck at a depth of 2 kilometers (1.2 mile), making it a very shallow earthquake.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) put the preliminary magnitude of Monday's earthquake at 4.3. There were no immediate reports of serious damage or casualties, but the tremor was widely felt across Athens and the nearby area.

"Brief but strong. It felt like two shakes with a brief half-second pause between them," one resident in Agios Stefanos, which is close to the epicenter, told EMSC. Another resident, in Erythraia, said: "Very strong movement. About 10 seconds. Very frightening."

Several million people across the area are likely to have felt Monday's earthquake. In Vyronas, a resident told EMSC: "At the beginning is sounded like a bomb that was dropped and then it start shaking. It was very short though but it felt strong."

Other details were not immediately available.
