1 yr | North Korea convenes military meeting over South Korean propaganda

North Korea has convened an emergency meeting of the Central Military Commission (CMC) to discuss the escalating tensions on the Korean peninsula, the South's Yonhap news agency is reporting. It is unclear whether leader Kim Jong Un, who is the chairman of the commission, was also present. The meeting came just hours after North Korea warned South Korea that it would take military action if the South does not end its propaganda within 48 hours. That warning came after North Korea fired a shell towards a South Korean loudspeaker, prompting South Korea to respond with tens of artillery rounds.

1 yr | N. Korea threatens military action if South does not end propaganda within 48 hours

North Korea is warning South Korea that it will take military action if the South does not halt its anti-Pyongyang propaganda broadcasts along their shared border within 48 hours. The warning was delivered in a letter delivered to the South at around 5 p.m. local time, about one hour after North Korea fired a shell towards a South Korean loudspeaker that had been broadcasting propaganda, prompting South Korea to respond with tens of artillery rounds. "The North side threatened to start military action if the South does not stop its anti-Pyongyang psychological broadcasting and remove all the facilities in 48 hours from 5:00 p.m.," the South's defense ministry said in a statement, as quoted by the Yonhap news agency.

1 yr | North Korea to introduce new timezone this month

The North Korean government has decided to push back its clocks by 30 minutes, returning the country to a timezone originally used by the Korean Empire in the late 19th century. The new timezone, which will be called Pyongyang Time, will take effect on August 15, the state-run KCNA news agency announced. "The wicked Japanese imperialists committed such unpardonable crimes as depriving Korea of even its standard time," KCNA reported, referring to Japan's annexation of Korea in 1910. North Korea is currently on Korean Standard Time, the same timezone used by the South. [Full KCNA dispatch attached]

1 yr | North Korea says ‘not interested’ in Iran-like nuclear talks with world powers

North Korea says it is "not interested" in Iran-like talks with world powers to dismantle its nuclear weapons program, rejecting an offer by the United States. "The DPRK is not interested at all in the dialogue to discuss the issue of making it freeze or dismantle its nukes unilaterally first," a foreign ministry spokesman said in a statement, referring to the country by its official name. "The nuclear deterrence of the DPRK is not a plaything to be put on the negotiating table as it is the essential means to protect its sovereignty and vital rights from the U.S. nuclear threat and hostile policy."  1 yr | N. Korea ‘executed more than 70 officials’ since Kim Jong Un took power - Seoul

The North Korean government has purged and executed more than 70 officials in the 3.5 years since leader Kim Jong Un took power, South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se has claimed. "It is a sevenfold increase, compared with the first three years of Chairman Kim Jong-il's leadership. It's extremely unusual," the minister said, as cited by the Yonhap news agency. Yun did not specify the source of his information, but the number is lower than the one previously provided by South Korea's spy agency, which had claimed some 90 officials had been executed.
