2 yrs | Man arrested after 8 people shot dead at Texas home

A 49-year-old man has been arrested after eight people, including five children, were shot and killed at a suburban Houston home. The incident began at around 9 p.m. when deputies were called to a home in northwest Houston to perform a welfare check, but no one responded at the front door, KHOU-TV reported. SWAT was called in when officers received information indicating that a man in the home was wanted on a warrant for aggravated assault on a family member. After police spotted the body of a juvenile through the window, deputies forced their way in, after which they came under fire from the suspect. A negotiator arrived and, about an hour later, the suspect surrendered without further incident. Police then discovered a total of eight bodies, including five children and three adults.

Houston voters will get to decide in November whether the city should repeal the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO), which prohibits discrimination in city employment, services, public accommodations, and housing based on a person's gender, race, and sexual orientation. The Texas Supreme Court last month instructed the City Council to either repeal the ordinance in a council vote or leave it up to voters to decide. Today, the Council voted 13-4 to put the proposal on the ballot in November. A council vote to repeal the ordinance failed by 12-5.
