Southwest Airlines plane suffers engine explosion, killing 1

A Southwest Airlines flight has made an emergency landing in Philadelphia after one of its engines experienced an explosion, causing damage and injuring several passengers, officials and witnesses say.

The incident happened just after 11 a.m. ET on Tuesday when some sort of explosion affected one of the engines on Southwest Airlines Flight 1380, which was flying from New York City to Dallas.

The explosion broke a window and caused the cabin to depressurize, forcing passengers to put on their oxygen masks. The aircraft descended and made an emergency landing at Philadelphia International Airport about 20 minutes later.

Several people were injured during the incident, but the exact number of victims was not immediately clear. Southwest Airlines said the Boeing 737-700 was carrying 143 passengers and 5 crew members at the time of the incident.

Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are expected to investigate. Flights heading to Philadelphia International Airport have been delayed as a result of the incident.
