At least 20,000 pro-Europe protesters rally in Athens as default looms

Some 20,000 people rallied in Athens tonight to express their support for a bailout deal with international creditors, just hours before Greece is set to default on a debt payment to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

              The Greek parliament has overwhelmingly voted in favor of tough economic measures demanded by international creditors, paving the way for Greece to access an €86 billion bailout, though further talks and reforms will be needed. A total of 299 members of parliament cast their vote; 229 of whom voted Yes, 64 who voted No, and six who abstained. The new legislation includes measures such as tax increases and an increase in the retirement age. Energy minister Panagiotis Lafazanis and former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis were among those who voted against the bill.
