The incident happened at about 8:05 a.m. on Thursday when the children are believed to have been removed from Burlington Elementary School by 56-year-old Barry Smith. Only few details about the circumstances have been released.
"The father had allegedly made a series of very threatening statements to the mother about harming the children. The suspect's actions and statements to the mother indicate that the children are in immediate danger," the amber alert said.
The suspect and the children are believed to be traveling in a 2004 white Ford Crown Victoria 4-door with Kansas license plate 339GDW. The vehicle is a DZ Cab Company vehicle and contains a DZ cab driver.
Photos of the suspect or the children were not immediately available, but suspect Barry Smith is described as a 56-year-old black male with short black hair, brown eyes and possibly a mustache. He is 6 feet 1 tall, weighs 240 pounds and was last seen wearing khaki pants and a khaki shirt.
The suspect was last seen in the Topeka area, according to police, but it is unknown where exactly they are heading. Anyone who sees either the suspect, the children or the vehicle is urged to call 911 immediately.
