Police and other emergency services in Washington, D.C. were called to a report of an active shooter in the 1400 block of I Street, but it quickly turned out to be a false alarm. The scene is near McPherson Square Station and just a few blocks from the White House.

The incident began at about 3:15 p.m. ET on Friday when officers were called to reports of an active shooter in the 1400 block of I Street NW, but specific details were not immediately available. It's unclear what prompted the report.

The Metropolitan Police Department briefly urged people in the area to shelter in place while a large number of emergency services - including heavily-armed police officers - responded to the scene. It was determined minutes later that no shooting had taken place.

Police officers searched at least one building in the 1400 block of I Street NW and no evidence of a shooting was found. There have been no reports of injuries and roads which were briefly closed had reopened by 3:35 p.m.

"Reports of an active shooter in the 1400 block of I St, NW are unfounded," the Metropolitan Police Department said on its Twitter account. "The scene is safe and in the process of being cleared."
