Multiple people killed after pedestrian bridge collapses at FIU
Several people have been killed after a pedestrian bridge collapsed at Florida International University in Miami on Thursday, according to a spokesman with the Florida Highway Patrol.
Footage from local affiliate WSVN-TV shows several cars crushed underneath the bridge. At least 6 people are believed to have died in the bridge collapse at Florida International University in Miami, U.S. Senator Bill Nelson tells MSNBC. At least four people have been injured, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
Emergency crews are on scene. It is not immediately known if there was anyone on the bridge at the time, but search and rescue efforts are currently underway.
The bridge was just installed Saturday and was funded as part of a $19.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, according to a fact sheet about the bridge on Florida International University’s website.
FIU spokesperson Maydel Santana-Bravo issued the following statement:
“We are shocked and saddened about the tragic events unfolding at the FIU-Sweetwater Bridge,” she said. “At this time, we are still involved in rescue efforts and gathering information. We are working closely with authorities and first responders on the scene. We will share updates as we have them.”
