2 people shot outside high school near Atlanta
Shots have been fired outside a high school near Atlanta, killing a woman and injuring two others, local officials say. It happened after a graduation event that took place across the street.
The incident happened just after 9 p.m. ET on Friday when police were called to reports of shots being fired in the parking lot of Mount Zion High School, which is located near Jonesboro.
The Clayton County Fire Department told WXIA-TV that two people were shot, including a woman in her 40s who suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the chest. She was taken to an area hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
The second victim, a 21-year-old woman, was shot in one of her legs, WXIA-TV reported. A third victim, described only as a pregnant woman, suffered injuries when she was pushed while people fled from the area.
Clayton County Schools Police Chief Thomas Trawick said the shooting followed some type of argument, but details were not immediately released. There was no immediate word on the status or identity of the shooter.
“We are saddened that such an incident has occurred that overshadows such a positive ceremony involving an exceptional group of graduating seniors,” Superintendent Morcease Beasley said.
